FAQ Before Taking Steps to Remodel a Kitchen

by Waverly Wilde

Whether your oak cabinets haven’t been updated since the late 1980s or you're ready for your appliances to come with more than one simple feature, it’s probably safe to say that your kitchen could use a little updating. Although remodeling sounds very exciting, if you don’t have a lot of expertise in that area, starting a large project like this could get a bit overwhelming.

Luckily, our professionals at Grand Appliance and TV are here to help you understand how to remodel a kitchen and prepare you for the road ahead. It’s always a good idea to discuss your goals and expectations with an expert and ultimately get all your remodeling questions answered – no matter how dumb you think they sound. So, when you can no longer handle having an outdated cooking space, we’ve answered a few common frequently asked questions to help you take the right steps to remodel a kitchen.

Where do I even start when planning a kitchen remodel?

The first steps to remodel a kitchen all start with ideas, goals, a little measuring, and a hard budget. It’s ok to get extravagant when figuring out what you want – your hard budget will prevent you from going too overboard and force you to realize that yes, you can really live without gold countertops.

Come up with a kitchen remodel checklist of things you want accomplished by the end of your remodeling. All new black stainless steel appliances installed, an addition of a kitchen island, and walls painted in Pantone’s 2020 color of the year – Classic Blue, are just a few doable goals you could make. Some people even find it easier to just start off with an overall style or theme for their kitchen, such as modern or farmhouse, before jumping into remodeling.

Once you have your budget, checklist and big picture ideas in place, we recommend picking out your appliances. As stated in an April blog titled “ Appliance Pro Tips for Starting Your Kitchen Project ,” your kitchen setup and requirements will depend heavily on your appliance selections. Understanding the sizes, customization options and installation requirements early in the process will help you avoid surprises later. Read the full blog for more details

What’s the average price of a kitchen remodel?

Surprisingly, you don’t have to break the bank in order to perform a kitchen remodel! Depending on the size of your kitchen, how much work you want to put in yourself, or how many buddies can give you a hand, you could be looking at a rather inexpensive kitchen remodel of around $5,000. Of course, if you don’t care about price, you could easily spend $50,000 creating a whole new kitchen. But, on average you’re looking at around $10,000-$30,000 for a regular kitchen remodel.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

This question is also dependent on several factors. If you have a small kitchen and are just looking at getting new appliances installed, this could easily be done within a day to a couple of days. If you are looking at adding additional electric and plumbing on top of appliances, new hardware, painting, and more, this could easily be a 3-5 month job.

Do I need to be out of my house when a remodel is happening?

Yes and no. A kitchen remodel is not the quietest project which means there are times when you aren’t going to want to be around the ruckus. Instead, you’ll want to plan around the schedule of the remodel so that you are away while work is being done. Some days there may be a lot of dust flying around, so booking that weekend getaway you’ve been thinking about during the construction could be perfect time!
