If you’ve never had a hot dog from the Windy City, here’s a Chicago-style hot dog recipe for you to make at home. Make sure to follow those and you can’t go wrong with this Chicagoan dish. Trust us, one of our stores is located in Chicago, so we know what a good Chicago-style hot dog recipe should consist of.

  2. Steam your hot dog buns by placing them on a steamer basket inside a pot of hot water and let sit on the cooktop for about 2 minutes or until warm.
  3. Time to pile it all on and take a bite! Put your all-beef hot dog inside the warm bun and get creative with your toppings placements!

Ingredients:

  • 4 Hot Dog Buns
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter, Softened
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 4 Hot Dogs, Split Lengthwise
  • 3 Cups Cheddar Cheese, Shredded
  • 4 Green Onions, Sliced

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix butter, onion powder and garlic powder.
  2. Flatten your hot dog buns with a rolling pin and spread the butter concoction all over the exterior of the buns.
  3. Place the dough on a lightly floured work surface and cut off one third of it. Shape both sections of dough into flat discs, wrap them in clingwrap, and leave them to chill for 30 minutes in the fridge.
  4. Place the bun – butter side down – on the grill and add ½ cup of cheddar cheese, a hot dog, a sprinkle more of cheese, and ¼ of your green onion.
  5. Wait until the cheese begins melting before putting the other flattened bun on top.
  6. Take off the grill with a spatula and let cool before sinking your teeth into it.

3. RECIPE Grilled Barbecue Hot Dogs

We can all agree that while hot dogs may be the perfect comfort food, they aren’t always comforting to your diet. But if you cut out the bun and some toppings, you’ll get a more waist-friendly recipe. Try this bunless hot dog recipe for example: It has only six ingredients and one serving comes out to 170 calories – not so bad!

Ingredients:

  • 4 Hot Dogs
  • 1/2 Cup Barbecue Sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar

Directions:

  1. Heat your grill to a medium-high heat.
  2. Combine the barbecue sauce, honey, and apple cider vinegar into a grill-safe pan, place on the grill in an area where it doesn’t receive direct heat, and let it slowly warm up the mixture.
  3. Cut hash marks into your hot dogs with a sharp knife and place on the grill. Let them sit on the grill until they have sear marks.
  4. Use a grill brush to baste your hot dogs with the warmed-up sauce you just made, being sure to turn them a couple times.
  5. Remove the dogs from the grill and serve with a side of salad or your favorite grilled veggie to keep this meal on the healthy side.
